A Poem for Today

I wish I had a thicker skin

To keep the jerks

from getting in.

I wish I didn’t care so much

What people thought

About such and such.

I wish that I could

take hard knocks

and get back up

off the rocks.

I wish that I

just didn’t bleed

I wish kindness

I didn’t need.

I wish the world

Was a kinder place

And would stop kicking dirt

In each other other’s face.

I wish by words

People would not conclude

But by character

Would be the mood.

But these issues aren’t

what tears us apart

The real issue

Is of the heart.
